At the beginning of the 19th century, Earl Grey, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, added a curious slice of green orange to his tea, which had been given to him instead of the usual slice of lemon: it was Italian bergamot. Thus was born Earl Grey tea. Bright, fresh and intense, bergamot is the fruit of a tree similar to the orange or lemon tree: the bitter orange. Blossoming in April, it perfumes the surrounding area with its flowers in Calabria, a region in southern Italy that covers 95% of the world’s production.
