Rooibos, also known as ‘red tea’, is often compared to tea and contains no caffeine or theine. On the contrary, it is reputed to help you fall asleep! It comes from an endemic plant grown in the Cedarberg region, north of Cape Town. It is the national drink of South Africa and is offered to visitors as a sign of hospitality. The local people, the bushmen, harvest this plant between January and May and consume it throughout the year, either on its own or with fruit, spices or other plants.
