Originally from the Indonesian archipelago, in the 15th century the nutmeg was only grown on one island, the island of Run. It was so coveted that all the European powers tried to colonise the island, which eventually ended up in the hands of the English. However, the Dutch managed to get the island back by exchanging it for… Manhattan! The famous district of New York was thus exchanged for nutmeg, otherwise it would probably have remained Dutch.
